DARK SKY TREK
Join us for one of the most unique backcountry mountain star gazing adventures on the planet! We will base at the Coyote Yurts, perched at 8700’ high above Sun Valley and surrounded by the Dark Sky Reserve. The yurts provide an amazing home deep in the wilds of Central Idaho with all of the comforts needed to relax and enjoy a night of Dark Sky viewing.
Day 1: Participants who enjoy hiking have the opportunity to hike the beautiful Adams Gulch Trail 9 miles up to Coyote Yurts. All your personal equipment will be shuttled to the yurts ahead of your arrival. Other participants may opt to ride the shuttle van for a 40 minute drive north (pavement, dirt roads and deep in to wilds of Idaho) to reach the Coyote Yurts. After an optional short hike (3 miles) rounding Fox Peak, we roll into the Coyote Yurts, where the barbeque will be smoking, cold drinks and appetizers awaiting. As night falls Matt Benjamin, part-time local and renowned astronomer, will provide an educational presentation on the celestial realm. This weekend is close to the climax of the annual Perseid Meteor shower and we should see between 20-40 meteors per hour. Plus there will be a telescope on hand for guests to peer a little deeper into the cosmos. For any aspiring Photogs, Matt will also be available to teach you how to use your DSLR cameras for the purposes of Astrophotography.
Day 2: After breakfast, guests can pack their personal belongings that will be shuttled back to town while the group heads out on the hike known as Edge of the World. Our destination is the spectacular Oregon Gulch Trail, dropping 1800’ (4 miles) through fields of wild flowers, burned forest and along ridgelines down Oregon Gulch. The Shuttle Van will meet us at the trailhead and bring us back to Ketchum. Other hiking opportunities exist based upon participant interest.
